Employers often ask for evidence of teamwork, planning, resilience, communication and problem-solving. For some young people, especially those with limited paid work experience, those examples can feel difficult to find. Practical STEM activity can help because it gives learners something concrete to describe.
What a project can evidence
A design, engineering or making task often includes several stages that naturally connect to employability language:
- Investigate: researching a need, understanding a brief and asking better questions.
- Design: generating ideas, making decisions and justifying choices.
- Make: using tools, organising time and working accurately.
- Test: checking quality, responding to failure and improving the result.
- Explain: reflecting on what changed, what went well and what was learned.
That sequence can provide much stronger interview material than vague statements such as “I am a hard worker” because the learner can explain what they actually did.
Why this matters for employability
A practical task can help a learner answer common interview questions like “Tell me about a time you solved a problem” or “Describe a time you worked with others.” It can also help teachers and youth practitioners spot strengths that the learner may not notice in themselves.
